International Student’s Guide: Communicating To Potential Employers

The types of employment listed above DO NOT require employer sponsorship.

When asked if you need sponsorship:

  • Answer "No" because you are currently eligible to work without sponsorship.
  • If the employer is open to future sponsorship and you want to be transparent, you can answer "Yes, but I am currently authorized to work with OPT authorization."
  • If the employer asks how long you have work authorization, you answer “I have OPT work authorization for up to 3 years” (if you have a STEM major).

By keeping your responses precise and clear, you can minimize questions and help ensure you advance through the interview process smoothly.
